Illinois Senate OKs proposal for new casinos. The bill is now in the House.
State Sen. Terry Link's bill proposing expanded casino gambling in Illinois, including in Lake County, passed the Senate this week with a vote of 32 to 20. The bill, which proposes five new casinos, moved to the House Thursday. Prior to the Senate vote, Link told members the new casinos could generate an initial $1.2 billion for the deficit state, reported the Daily Herald. If approved, possible locations for a casino in Lake County include Park City, North Chicago and Waukegan. Lake County Democratic chairman complains about negative campaigning.
State Sen. Terry Link (D-Waukegan), the Lake County Democratic Chairman, publically criticized campaign tactics ahead of Tuesday’s 10th District Congressional District primary contest for the right to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the fall. Earlier Wednesday, Link specifically accused one of candidates, Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, of a strategy the Lake County party leader fears could lead to a Dold victory in November. Groups supporting Sheyman like MoveOn and True Majority PAC have been flooding the area with telephone calls and advertising attacking one of Sheyman’s opponents, Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, for making some donations to Republicans. Patch first reported on this in May. …

Senator mentored state senator during her first campaign.
If it had not been for the encouragement of Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield), state Sen. Susan Garrett's (D-Lake Forest) political career may never have been. The account of Durbin’s efforts for Garrett was just one of the stories told about the retiring state senator when she received the Ab Mikva Political Courage Award from the Tenth Congressional District Democrats (Tenth Dems) last Sunday at the Highland Park Country Club. “He really mentored me,” Garrett said of her first campaign for the Illinois General Assembly in 1998. Durbin was one of more than 250 people at the Tenth Dems annual fall event. In addition to honoring Garrett, the gathering rallied local Democrats as campaign activities for the March 20 primary and the …

Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) with Garrett’s endorsement before a crowd of more than 50 supporters Thursday at a Deerfield restaurant. Garrett currently represents all or part of Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Highwood, Highland Park, Deerfield, Glencoe, Northbrook, Glenview and Des Plaines. The new 29th State Senate District will include less of Glencoe, Glenview and Northbrook, but take in part of Buffalo Grove. “It was a pretty easy decision,” Garrett said. “I’ve accomplished a lot …
