Gymnast Zimmerman Has His Own Style

Deerfield senior looks to qualify for State when he is not running his catering business.

Deerfield HIgh School's Doran Zimmerman is always looking for a little extra flair. Whether it is playing the viola, cooking for his catering company or adding a new trick to his high bar routine for the Deerfield-Highland Park gymnastics team, Zimmerman is looking for style. “I like doing different things,” Zimmerman, who also wrestled at 152 pounds for Deerfield this year, said. “Cooking is a hobby of mine. My specialty is homemade pasta.” Zimmerman cooks so well that he began his own catering business. His love for cooking now has him serving small parties. “It all started when I was in boy scouts,” Zimmerman said. “I would forage for wild onions and throw them into breakfast.” Zimmerman also has redeveloped a love for gymnastics. Two Coaches' Careers Grew Together

Deerfield resident Robin Straus has coached and taught at Lake Forest High School for more than 30 years. Carol Myers of Lake Forest calls Deerfield High School home.

The lives of Robin Straus of Deerfield and Carol Myers of Lake Forest have been intensely intertwined for more than 30 years.  In that time the two coaches and teachers have touched the lives of numerous young people in both communities.  Straus grew up in Highland Park and lived her adult life in Deerfield. She's been at Lake Forest High School since 1979, coaching gymnastics and teaching physical education. She retired as a teacher in June but continues to coach.  After growing up on Long Island in her early years, Myers moved with her family to Northbrook in high school. She settled in Lake Forest after college where she taught for a semester in 1979 before taking a job as a gym teacher and gymnastics coach at Deerfield High School.  “…

What a special article! Carol, you have given so much to DHS volleyball thatt wasn't even mentioned. Now you have a second generation in our family with Kiley," I'm not an athlete."
