Highland Park gets covered in the season's first snowfall.
The night after an "isolated blizzard" hit Central Avenue, real snow fell in Highland Park. Patch photojournalist Steve Handwerker was awake at 2:30 a.m., Friday, when he noticed winter's first snow. Only hours after returning from shooting the shopping event in downtown Highland Park, he went back to snap some shots of the season's first snowfall. See photos of the snow above. Port Clinton Square is about to get a lot icier.
Central Avenue isn't the only part of Highland Park that's covered in ice. A new ice skating rink opens Thursday afternoon in Port Clinton Square. Made from synthetic ice, the 50-foot rink will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. "The ice rink is something that we expect to be a new treasured tradition in downtown Highland Park for years to come," Amy Amdur, Marketing Chairperson for the Downtown Highland Park Alliance, said in a statement. Admission price and plans to provide rental skates are pending.

Local resident and Alpha Custom Detail owner Tim Thoelecke knows this first hand. Tholecke sees all kinds of vehicles— some in better shape than others, he says. From 12-year-old cars that look virtually new to their two-year-old counterparts that have seen better days, Tholecke encounters a little bit of everything. Although a thorough detailing can give new life to the neglected car, it will never look as good as the one that is regularly maintained, Thoelecke explains. "Chicago area winters can wreak havoc with a car, both inside and out," he says. Here, check out …

Depending on who you ask, winter started weeks ago with the holiday lighting ceremony in Highland Park. Or maybe it started last weekend with the ice sculpting in Port Clinton Square. If you ask us, though, winter started late last night when snow began falling. Since the snow doesn't seem to be letting up almost a day later, we decided to go out and see what Highland Park looks like covered in white. See photos below.
