Winter Blast to Hit Highland Park: Tips for Safe Walking in Snow and Ice

The Snow & Ice Management Association offers tips to avoid a fall during slick conditions.

The Highland Park area is expected to get another blast of wintry weather today. Accuweather.com reports the city will get two to four inches of snow Thursday evening through Friday afternoon.  While most people prepare for driving safely in the snow, rarely to people think about keeping safe while walking in icy conditions. "Every winter the hazards of driving in snow and icy conditions are noted, but rarely is walking on snow and ice addressed," said Martin B. Tirado, CAE, Executive Director of the Snow & Ice Management Association. "Slipping and falling while walking accounts for a large number of winter-related injuries and can have an impact on the quality of life for the injured person." Wintry Weather on its Way to Highland Park

The National Weather Service is predicting two to four inches of new snow accumulation Thursday night in Highland Park.

Snow along with freezing drizzle could make for dicey driving conditions Thursday night and Friday morning.  The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of the Chicago suburbs with snow expected to start late Thursday afternoon and continue into the night before switching to freezing drizzle and light snow by early Friday.  Between two to four inches of snow is predicted for Highland Park late Thursday. Snow and freezing drizzle is expected before noon on Friday. Temperatures will reach a high of 35 degrees later in the day on Friday.  "Anyone planning travel across Northern Illinois or Northwest Indiana should be prepared for wintry precipitation and associated travel impacts from this winter storm," …

Winter Storm Watch in Effect Through Thursday Night

'Thundersnow' is possible as rain changes to snow and strong winds develop, the National Weather Service says. The warning includes Cook and Lake counties.

It's taken a while for the season's snow to show itself, but it looks like it's coming back with a vengeance.  The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Thursday evening through late Thursday night. A total of two to six inches of snow is likely, with more accumulation in the north and northwest suburbs than in the city. Rain will likely change to wet snow from west to east in the afternoon and evening, growing heavy at times, the weather service says. Strong winds are also likely to develop. "Thundersnow" is possible, the weather service says, and winds may reach 30-40 mph by late Thursday afternoon, and up to 60 mph at night.
