#7 should be rated in the top 10 by stupidity. Author published "the fresh" story about how M closed last week, but it was already closed for over a month before the article. What a bummer. Author should do some investigative journalism by counting traffic across the street at Anthropology store. Perhaps, he would get something before rather than after :)   more ›

Highland Park Patch's Top Stories of 2011

A lot can change in a year.

2011 was quite the year for Highland Park, and for this news website the year couldn't have been more exciting.  The city elected its first female mayor, rejected a hotly contested high school referendum and started taking bids for the controversial, city-owned Highland Park Theatre. See the full list of top stories below, and feel free to let us know what other stories you loved in 2011.   And, as an added bonus, the most-read columns of 2011 were: Thanks for making 2011 so …

One Dad’s Year in Review

World events secondary to son’s growth.

As the year winds up, it seems like everyone is doing a Year in Review for 2011.  And what a year it was. It was the beginning of married life for William and Kate. (What I protest is when they don’t pick an actual person for this honor. But, I digress.) Mother Nature generated numerous headlines, with many affecting my family personally.  Locally, we had the Blizzard of 2011 in February. And in June, our family was one of many here that endured the consequences of power outages after the big storm.  Some events from around the world hit home with us, too. The earthquake…

Highlands and Ravines

2011: The Year in Review

Ed Brill looks back on the past year in Highland Park.

Forty-five columns ago, I began writing "Highlands and Ravines" for Highland Park Patch.  This column covered a lot of ground during 2011. As the year winds down, it's a good opportunity to look back on some general themes and how they evolved during the year. Fort Sheridan Golf Course: I started the year with high hopes that the Lake County Forest Preserve District would come up with a compromise proposal for the lakefront parcel they received at no charge during Army base shutdown. Through five columns, I explored the possibilities for this property, including a strong suggestion that our elected County officials try to conceive of a "plan B." At the end of the year, very little has progressed. A request for proposal for the golf course …
