North Shore 'Yogathon' to Raise Funds and Awareness for Lung Cancer

The LUNGevity Foundation will host the 'Breathe Deep Yogathon' at the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute in Highland Park on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The North Shore community is invited to attend the LUNGevity Foundation's "Breathe Deep Yogathon" at the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute in Highland Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The event will offer six classes, each featuring a different yoga style, taught by local well-known instructors. Massages, Reiki treatments, and refreshments will also be provided, and the day will end with an inspirational and healing gong bath. Shri Yoga Wins Best Yoga in Highland Park

The center got nearly 100 votes though it was only in the poll for one day.

Though the center has only been open since last October, it seems to have already accumulated a strong, dedicated following. Out of the 157 votes cast in this week's poll, Shri received 96. Healing Power Yoga came in second with 50 votes. "Shri has the best, most approachable and dedicated teachers!" wrote Meagan Lynch-Messer in the comments. New Studio Offers Aerial Yoga

New studio uses specialized equipment to provide workouts for students of all types.

At Highland Park’s new Yoga Bent Studio, 25 slings dangle from the ceiling. Students can step into one and hang suspended in the air, stretching their muscles in ways they couldn’t do on the ground. Another set of 25 bands made of bungee cord can be adjusted to support your body, helping to activate other muscle groups and build up endurance as students work on poses. The specialized gear was all designed by co-owner Miguel Latronica, who has been teaching yoga for more than 15 years. The first floor of his new facility serves as manufacturing space for his products, which he exports to England, Japan and other countries around the world. Gayl Walder Turns Doctor's Office Into Yoga Room

A Highland Park yoga instructor released a DVD to help those facing stressful medical situations.

For most people, there's nothing relaxing about waiting in a doctor's office. If you're worried you might get bad news, even reading a magazine can be a futile endeavor. For Gayl Walder, who knows all too well how stressful the setting can be, the doctor's office is the perfect place for yoga. The 45-year-old yoga instructor, who teaches at Equinox and Healing Power Yoga in Highland Park, recently produced a DVD titled Healing in Motion. The unconventional project features Walder going through a series of yoga poses in a doctor's office wearing everyday street clothes.
