Office Depot, OfficeMax to Merge in $1.2 Billion Deal

Office Depot will acquire OfficeMax to combine two of the leading office supply stores nationwide.

Office Depot is merging with Naperville-based OfficeMax, the Associated Press reports. Office Depot will aquire its rival company in a $1.2 billion all stock deal. OfficeMax addressed the merger in a brief statement posted on its website today: “The OfficeMax mission is simple: We provide workplace innovation that enables our customers to work better. As a combined company, OfficeMax and Office Depot will have the resources to provide a wide array of services and solutions to help you move your business ahead,” the statement read. Until the merger is complete, which is expected at the end of 2013, OfficeMax and Office Depot will continue to run as two separate companies, the OfficeMax statement read. Portillo’s Emerges as Readers' Choice for Office Depot Space

In latest Patch poll, readers got to pick other and that turned out to be Portillo’s.

Have you ever seen a poll where you were cheering for “other” to win? For those with that wish it was granted by the survey Patch conducted to gauge reader interest in a tenant for the former Office Depot space near the intersection of Waukegan and Lake Cook Roads. Earlier: Poll: What Should Replace Office Depot Of the 14 people who responded to the poll, six chose “other” with five hoping for a food store, two for a computer center and one for a food operation. Six readers were able to personify “other” and it has a name: Portillo’s. Though he has concerns about the location, Forest Barbieri is one of them. Poll: What Should Replace Office Depot?

With Deerfield considering zoning changes to ease the way for businesses to open in the Lake Cook Road Corridor, Patch wants to know what readers would like to see open in the former Office Depot site.

Readers have been active with their comments throughout Patch’s coverage of attempts to renovate the Deerbrook Mall but little attention has been given to the former Office Depot across the way on the east side of Waukegan Road. The southeast corner of Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads will soon be a medical office building as well as the location of the former George’s What’s Cooking but what is in store for the building which once housed Office Depot?  Earlier: Village Moves to Strengthen Deerbrook Area Mayor Harriet Rosenthal has been pushing for retail use of vacant space in the Lake Cook Road corridor to generate sales tax for the Village. Office Depot to Close Deerfield Store

No date set for doors to shut.

Office Depot became the second retailer in April to announced plans to close a Deerfield location in the vicinity of Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads, according to store personnel Monday. No date has been set for the closing, according to store personnel, but a person was standing in front of the Waukegan Road store with a sandwich board advertising a sale arising from the news, according to people driving by the location.
