25 Years After Laurie Dann's Violent Spree

Twenty-five years ago on May 20, Laurie Dann went on a violent rampage that included arsenic-laced Rice Krispies treats, three pistols, a can of gasoline and a firebomb.

This Monday is an anniversary that many may prefer to soon forget.

Twenty-five years ago on May 20, Laurie Dann went on a violent spree that included arsenic-laced Rice Krispies treats,  three pistols, a can of gasoline and a firebomb. The Glencoe native killed an 8-year-old and wounded five other children at Winnetka's Hubbard Woods Elementary, according to the Evanston Review. She threw a firebomb into Ravinia Elementary School, which fizzled out before harming anyone.

She shot Philip Andrew in the chest of his home before turning one of her guns on herself and committing suicide, the Evanston Review reports.

There has unfortunately been more school violence since Dann's rampage: Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently in Newtown.

A Highland Park attorney began pushing for armed guards in schools earlier this year, and District 113 has approved plans to increase security at Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools.

Perhaps most importantly, as the Evanston Review article points out, the way police respond to school shootings is fundamentally different than it was on May 20, 1988.
