Highland Park Debate Team Takes Second

Nussbaum, Zionts earn top individual awards.

Highland Park High School’s varsity Congressional Debate team won second place last weekend at the Conant High School invitational tournament against 24 schools and over 200 competitors.

Daniel Nussbaum (Sr.) and Jacob Zionts (Jr.) won first place speaking awards, while Cameron Deahl (Sr.), Ross Hozman (Jr.), and Caleb Goldstein (Jr.) each won second place. Ruth Libowsky (Sr.), Ben Rubin (Jr.), and Claire Rafson (Jr.) won third place speaker.

Ross Hozman (Jr.), Claire Rafson (Jr.), Caleb Goldstein (Jr.), and Corey Novick (So.) were voted as best presiding officer by their peers.

The Highland Park High School’s Congressional Debate team returns after winning the past four regular season tournaments and winning both the upper and lower divisions of the state competition.

“Our team is and will be as strong as ever,” the team’s president, senior Daniel Nussbaum, said referring to Highland Park’s strong showing in the novice (new members) section of the tournament where freshman Brad Leshem and sophomore Erica Littman won first place speaker, and junior Marianne Chirica took the second place award. 

The team’s next tournament is the weekend of October 11 and 12 at Wheeling High School where, Nussbaum explains, “we’ll be going for the win.”
