Giants Rout Minooka in Tourney Opener

Highland Park High School boys' basketball team advances in York holiday tournament.

Handcuffing Minooka’s offense to single digit scoring for the first three quarters, the Highland Park High School boys’ basketball team defeated the Indians, 53-35, Thursday in the opening round of the York Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament in Elmhurst.

The Giants grabbed a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter expanding it to 29-16 by halftime. The Highland Park rout continued in the third period as the team built its edge to 40-23 going into the final stanza.

Highland Park’s defense was bolstered by stealing the ball 12 times with Hallvard Lundevall getting four, Max Goshen three and both David Sachs and Jacob Iden grabbing a pair each.

Sachs and Luke Norcia led the Giant’s scoring as Sachs poured in 14 points as well as dishing out five assists, grabbing three rebounds and stealing the ball twice. Norcia added 13 tallies as well as a pair of assists, a steal and a rebound.

Jordan Krawitz chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds as well as an assist while Lundevall contributed five scores and two rebounds to go with his four steals. Goshen had six points, two assists, a block and a rebound as well as his three thefts while Iden added to his defense with five tallies, a pair of assists and a rebound.

Highland Park is now 7-2 for the season and plays St. Patrick at 6 p.m. today in the second rout of the tournament.
